This article is an important reminder of the need for an annual eye exam for children.

UpTempo Group's curator insight, February 9, 5:51 PM

A recent study conducted in the U.S. highlights the need for young children to get an annual eye exam.  In this study 492 children between the ages of 4-5 were asked to complete a standard literacy test. The results of this literacy test were then compared to the outcomes of early eye exams. Researchers found that children with undiagnosed hyperopia had significant problems with the print sections of the test that covered recognition of letters and numbers.

Researchers estimate that up to 14% of preschool age children suffer from undiagnosed hyperopia.

Prior studies have proven a link between farsightedness and reading ability in school-age children. This study is one of the first to show a link between early untreated hyperopia and reading ability.  One of the researchers, Dr. Kulp, believes that undiagnosed hyperopia in early life may lead to literacy problems later on in their school years.

Dr. David Blair is an expert in the treatment of both hyperopia, farsightedness, and myopia, nearsightedness. For myopia, he is an expert in the treatment with orthokeratology, as well as corrective lenses and contact lenses.  If you are concerned about the vision of your child, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Blair for a comprehensive eye exam.

The Eye Care Industry Focuses On Boomers -- And Millennials

The Eye Care Industry Focuses On Boomers -- And Millennials | Drs. McIntyre, Garza, Avila, & Jurica | Scoop.it

"A recent study published in JAMA reports that in China (where rates of myopia have skyrocketed to roughly 90% among urban youth), the major cause could be a lack of sun exposure. But young adults aren’t the only ones struggling to see clearly. Older adults are also looking for treatments that address their age-related vision problems. Amid rising demand, the eye care industry is poised to accelerate. It’s already developing new technologies that not only treat, but also prevent (and in some cases eliminate) vision problems."

UpTempo Group's insight:

This is an important article which highlights the need for an annual eye exam for both the Millennial and Baby Boomer Generations. Rates of myopia in our youth have grown significantly across the globe, and early detection and treatment is the best route to address vision problems in school and on the athletic field. For Baby Boomers, early detection of diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration provide patients with the best access to new treatment options.  Our practice has the most recent equipment to support early detection of these important vision problems. Please schedule an exam online today. http://www.cccontacts.com/

For Baby Boomers, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration or two disease with a high impact in the vision issues of this generation.  Once again, an eye exam is a great step forward in early diagnosis and access to the new treatment options available for these diseases.
